The presumption of innocence
The right to counsel
The right to unlawful search and seizure
The right to trial by jury
The right to confront witnesses These are tenets intrinsic to our judicial system. These rights apply to all persons regardless of race, creed, sex, national origin or class. As a criminal defense attorney, I am dedicated to the preservation of these rights for each and every individual.
After serving as Assistant State Attorney in Pasco and Pinellas County for over eleven years, I established a practice devoted to criminal defense. I have defended thousands of individuals charged with crime including those charged with First Degree Murder, DUI Manslaughter, Capital Sexual Battery as well as many individuals charged with less serious offenses such as DUI and Domestic Battery. I have done criminal defense work for over eleven years and primarily focus in Pasco and Pinellas Counties. I have had over 200 jury trials as well as over 200 non-jury trials.
I have been certified by the Florida Bar in Criminal Trial Law since August 1992. Currently, less than .5% of all Florida lawyers are so certified. I have served as an Assistant State Attorney with the State Attorney’s Office in Pasco and Pinellas Counties for over eleven years. I have worked as a Criminal Defense Attorney for over eleven years in Pasco, Pinellas, and Hernando Counties.
My trial experience consists of having tried over 200 jury trials of which 130 were felonies and the remainder DUI and/or misdemeanor cases. I have tried over 17 homicide cases.
My practice is devoted entirely to criminal defense. Quite often, I am retained before an individual is arrested or formally charged white the case is still under investigation by the police or State Attorney's Office. The advantage to my client in having retained an attorney while the case is under investigation is that we can present affirmative defenses or mitigating evidence to the police or State Attorney to prevent an arrest or preven formal charges from being filed.
I have also handled many post-trial motions such as Motion for New Trial, Motion for Postconviction Relief as well as Appeals for individuals who have already been convicted. On occasion, our efforts have resulted in new trials being granted, reduction of sentences as well as other relief.
I have been trained by the Florida Prosecuting Attorney’s Association at their Advanced Trial Advocacy Program; Search and Seizure Seminars and DUI Seminars. I have instructed at the Florida Prosecuting Attorney’s Association DUI Seminar. I have also been certified as an Instructor by the Commission on Criminal Justice Standards and Training within the State of Florida.
I have also attended the Life Over Death Seminar as well as the Death is Different Seminar. Both seminars dealt with the representation of defendants charges with capital murder.
My teaching experience also includes Adjunct Professor at the Police Academy at Pasco-Hernando Community College for over 3 years. I have instructed and trained police officers, as well as police officer candidates, in the area of Constitutional Law as well as Criminal Law and Procedure.
I graduated from Stetson University College of Law in December 1983 and became a Member of the Florida Bar in May 1984. I received the Naval Achievement Medal during my tenure as a Surface Warfare Officer while on Active Duty with the U.S. Navy (1977-1981).
